Two papers accepted for publishing that aknowledge the support of iMarine

  • [1]: P. Fafalios, M. Baritakis, and Y. Tzitzikas. Configuring Named Entity Extraction through Real-Time Exploitation of Linked Data. 4th International Conference on Web Intelligence, Mining and Semantics (WIMS'14). Thessaloniki Greece, June 2014.

[1] discusses about the exploitation of Linked Open Data (LOD) at real-time for configuring a Named Entity Extraction (NEE) system. In this paper a generic model for configuring a LOD-based NEE system is described. Furthermore the design and implementation of X-Link, a fully configurable (LOD-based) NEE tool that supports the proposed model, is being presented. Finally the results of (a) a task-based user study that demonstrate the usability and (b) a case study that demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach are being reported.

  • [2]: P. Fafalios and Y. Tzitzikas. Post-Analysis of Keyword-based Search Results using Entity Mining, Linked Data and Link Analysis at Query Time. 2014 IEEE 8th International Conference on Semantic Computing (ICSC 2014). Newport Beach, California, USA. June 2014.

[2] proposes a general method for semantic post-processing of search results which is based on entity mining and Linked Data. In this work a biased PageRank algorithm for ranking entities and properties which can identify and promote the important semantic information is being presented. Finally an evaluation of this approach is being performed based on the results of (a) a survey regarding the marine domain, (b) a comparative evaluation with other ranking methods and (c) experiments that reveal the applicability and efficiency of the proposed approach.

WP5: iMarine Data e-Infrastructure Deployment and Operation

WP Leader: CERN - Participants: CNR, NKUA, FAO, FIN

CNR was coordinating and performing the infrastructure upgrade to gCube 3.1.0 at the beginning of the month

CNR Activities related to gCube 3.1.0:

CNR Activities related to gCube next releases:

  • planning release 3.1.1 with selection of the components to be released.
  • planning release 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 till the end of the project

WP6: Virtual Research Environments Deployment and Operation

WP Leader: CNR - Participants: ERCIM, NKUA, FAO, FIN, UNESCO, CRIA, IRD

For Virtual Research Environments Operation:

  • The previously deployed Virtual Research Environments have been maintained in operation;

For resources and tools provision:

  • COTRIX development continued, e.g. VR plugin from Workspace, lineage mapping support, several enhancements and fixes;
  • Statistical Manager has been enhanced, e.g. errors propagation, data importing has been enhanced;
  • Statistical Manager algorithms publishing through WPS is ongoing;
  • Statistical Manager support for WFS has been enhanced to include the whole set of features;
  • Time Series Spectral Analysis facilities testing phase complete, ready for the first release;
  • Database Resources Manager software library development continued, it is ready for the first release;
  • IRD report:
    • Since may, IRD work on WPS has focused on "biological observations enrichment".
      • The iMarine wiki page explains the general approach [1].
    • Regarding linked data, we started to investigate the opportunity to reuse xlink for bibliographic references annotations.

For common interfaces and tools:

  • Report Management has been reinforced, e.g. added DwCA import facility, publishing accounting information;
  • Workspace has been enhanced, e.g. trash facility, items count, item sharing facility as a widget, bug fixing;
  • Home Library has been reinforced, e.g. search by property, performance test, bug fixing;
  • TabMan has been enhanced, e.g. code list extract, table and columns operations added like add and edit row;
  • Portal bundle mavenized;
  • Tag cloud visualisation widget completed;
  • Results portlet has been enhanced, e.g. tag cloud integrated, navigation toolbar added to the bottom of each page;
  • Users management portlet has been enhanced, e.g. filtering facility revised;
  • ElasticSearch portlet has been revised to use the Elastic Search UI;

During last month, the development of the RESTful OpenSearchDataSource Service has been completed. Resource Registry and Search System have also been updated to support this new kind of datasource. Index has been extended to support results visualization. In the context of the federated search, the development of RESTful SRU consumer and RDBMS adapter, using the resource-aware libraries, is in progress. Also, the implementation of an OAI-PMH adaptor has started this month. At last, Incident bugs regarding Resource Registry and log configuration as well as dependency issues have been resolved.

The Construction of the MarineTLO-based warehouse v4 is in ongoing. Furthermore, a set of connectivity metrics for evaluating MarineTLO-based warehouses are being implemented. Finally, the X-Link library is being updated to be exploited by Chimaera.

At last, WPS-Hadoop was under testing for migration to the CDH4 distribution and support was provided for the WPS-Hadoop algorithms integration.
