FIN Activities

Preparation of the TDWG conference with colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences.

Outline of a paper about testing AquaMaps on a real case, the Lessepsian migrants from Red Sea to Mediterranean (and the reverse although they are only a few). All maps and computations will be done under the infrastructure, including statistical analyses with the dedicated VRE in order to re-mobilize the AquaMaps community that is waiting for a new run with an additional climate change scenario. We also hope that a publication with the description of the VRE in the Material and Method section will help to increase the visibility of the infra-structure.

The re-run was delayed since February by two facts, see WP6 section T6.2.

UNESCO Activities

On 28 August 2012, the OBIS’ secretariat at UNESCO’s IOC project office for IODE in Oostende hosted a meeting between the iMarine managers (Donatella Castelli, Pasquale Pagano and Anton Ellenbroek), OBIS (Ward Appeltans, Aditya Naik Kakodkar) and several people at the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). VLIZ is hosting the OBIS and WoRMS databases and webservers and is involved in several important marine biodiversity projects (EMODNET, EuroMarine, LifeWatch, etc…). It was a fruitful meeting because we could identify a number of synergies and topics on which we can collaborate in the future, e.g., adding the OBIS webserver as a new node within the iMarine GRID infrastructure or sharing resources and developments, e.g., webservices. To formalize these agreements, the details on data access, terms of use and technical arrangements will be outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding.

Together with FIN (via skype calls), OBIS is also contributing to the preparation of the taxon name reconciliation process within the biodiversity cluster.
