It is part of the Monthly Activity Report.

T3.1 User Community Mediation

FAO Activities

Activities in this Month included:

  • Finalization of Draft 1 of first iMarine Board report, and dispatch.
  • Vision and plans for the four technical clusters.
  • Development of Board's overall workplan, for review by Board in June during Conf Call.
  • Discussed FCPPS type needs for FishFinder programme.

The discussion on the FishFinder (potential VRE) is not part of the DoW, but fits within the wider project mandate. If managed correctly, it will be very helpful in defining a roadmap for defining products in iMarine.

Reports produced in the period include:

  • iMarine Board report
  • iMarine Board Rules and Procedures
  • technical cluster overviews

T3.3 Harmonisation of Metadata, Semantics and Technologies

FAO Activities

In the reporting period, FAO worked on ICIS, SPREAD, and FLOD.

For ICIS, a consultant was contracted that first will evaluate the offer, and then define essential additions to adapt the VRE to the needs of RFB and natialnal statistical agengies to collect, harmonize and dessiminate data. First results will be presented at the TCom in June. Estimated effort was 5 days.

For the development of code list management FAO is investigating collaboration with other projects, following the the sustainability principle of 'find Users Now'. In this month, these did not materialize, and hence the effort invested by FAO was reduced to 2 days.

The SPREAD activity included an experiment to generate spatial intersections using WPS / Hadoop, for which an intersection algorithm was developed. This activiy includes publishing the FAO unified layer (all levels) in FI DEV Geoserver. In addition, an agreement with VLIZ for accessing EEZ layer through WFS directly from their Geoserver was needed.

The development of FLOD resulted in a new User Interface that is much more user friendly. In addition, the development of t a top-level ontology was supported.

  • A description of the Code List Manager discussed and open for comments
  • A validation report of the ICIS VRE
  • An experimental WPS / Hadoop algorithm for re-allocation
  • A user friendly FLOD

CNR Activities

CNR completed the integration of the WORMS and ITIS plugins for the Species Discovery Service. In particular, the WORMS integration supports taxonomic classification, translation from scientific name to common name and vice versa, synonyms search. In the second case, instead, a database snapshot of the datasource was created for enabling a fast search among synonyms, common names and species scientific names.

no deviations to report.

  • Integration of the WORMS data source
  • Integration of the ITIS data source

FORTH Activities

A teleconference with the participants of T3.3 has been carried during the first days of May. In this conference it was agreed that FORTH will create a first version of a top-level ontology that will be further circulated and revised by IRD (Julien) and FAO (Claudio, Anton). The draft has already been created and circulated (based on the requirements of IRD & FAO). Additionally some further clarification about FLOD is required. To this end FORTH required the actual schema of FLOD in order to better understand its concepts and the connections between them. This will allow revising the top level ontology. Discussions will also continue during month June 2012.

IRD Activities

Ongoing work is focusing on setting up a top level ontology for Ecosystem Approach to fisheries. Discussions with FORTH and FAO aim to decide what are the main classes and properties to take into account and the mapping with existing schemas (CIDOC, OBOE..). We will now work on reusing Taxon ranks coming from Worms and made available on FLOD sparql endpoint (Work of Claudio Baldassare). The goal is to display the taxon ranks from WORMS on IRD species fact sheets as well as using the taxon ranks to cluster the results of searching engines (FORTH).
