This WP3 Activity Report described the activities performed in April 2012 by Beneficiary and Task.

It is part of April 2012 Monthly Activity Report.

T3.1 User Community Mediation

FAO Activities

The iMarine Board tasks were discussed with individual Board members, and in particular on the collection of requirements; these will be organized in Work Plans by cluster (Biodiversity, semantics, geospatial and statistical). This resulted in draft work plans, which are still being negotiated.

The EA-CoP liaison task included participation to:

  • a requirements meeting with the VME-DB project,
  • internal FAO CIO meeting,
  • consultation with the FAO VRMF statistical officers, and
  • the announcement and kick-off with project and outside partners of the Code list manager activity.

D3.1 is still in delay, as it requires iMarine Board Work plans. This deliverable is blocking D6.2, and Milestones

Meetings with VME-DB project representatives

  • Define activities where imarine technologies can support the VME-informations services in the governance of VME data
  • Define shared interest of the different communities in defining data policies
  • Define a work-plan to continue information collection and exchange
  • Screen-by-screen drive through of the ICIS and other VRE's, highlighting geospatial and data management capabilities.

T3.3 Harmonisation of Metadata, Semantics and Technologies

FAO Activities

iMarine meetings:

  • Geospatial cluster call
  • ICIS/Statistical cluster call
  • OpenSDMX and SPREAD Technology
  • Semantic cluster calls; identify Use cases
  • VRE Planning

Start developments of the new Codelist Manager application:

  • discuss Use cases with CoP
  • discussion on the specific case of hierarchical layers (example of FAO layers)

OpenSDMX 0.1.2 - released 30 April 2012 - Main Features

  • Support for compression of SDMX Generic format datasets for the Repository and Registry, see (HowTo)
  • SDMX client with support for compression of SDMX Generic format datasets for the Repository
  • SDMX client: streaming is supported for SDMX 2.0 Generic dataset

SPREAD:

  • TimeSeries: detailed requirements for ICIS to:
    • Access the ICIS Metadata, especially: Timeseries reporting geospatial dimension (distinguish from other dimensions), access from programmatic (Java) interface, source layer metadata (through geo-codelists)
    • Geo-referencing Timeseries

FLOD

  • Publishing WoRMS data to be used by IRD througg a SparQL end-point

Consulting the EA-CoP takes longer than expected, while their feed-back on identifying VRE's, applications, and formats is essential. The organization of activities in clusters streamlines the process, and allows for targeted discussions.

CNR Activities

During the April month CNR spent effort in studying and defining the mapping for the harmonization of data according to the Darwin Core protocol. Furthermore the Catalog Of Life webservices interaction was studied in order to implement a smarted and more dynamic access to such data. This has been preferred to the more static database interaction in order to face harmonization issues with other data sources.

  • Study of data harmonization by means of the Darwin Core protocol
  • Study of the interaction methods provided by the Catalog of Life data source

FORTH Activities

We performed a local workshop (meeting) at FORTH about the top-level ontology of iMarine. We used as a starting point the requirements from IRD and FAO. We created a first draft model that covers these requirements and also proposes some generalizations and refinements. We agreed to continue our discussions during the next month and end up with a first version of the model that will be further discussed in subsequent months and in particular during the 2nd TCOM.
