This WP3 Activity Report described the activities performed in March 2012 by Beneficiary and Task.

It is part of the March 2012 Activity Report.

T3.1 User Community Mediation

FAO Activities

iMarine Board organization; the imarine Board was updated after a few new members accepted, and a few changes to the Board memberships were made. During the run-up to the first meeting, tasks were discussed with individual Board members, and several phone conferences were organized to increase the effectiveness of the Board collaborations. This resulted in a strategic planning for the discussions and decisions to be made at the imarine Board meeting in Rome,

During the reporting period, the first iMarine Board meeting, was organized and succesfully concluded in Rome.

The EA-CoP liaison included participation to international SDMX conferences, internal FAO KiSAF meetings, and consultation with the FAO VRMF statistical officers. In addition, several consultations were organized on e.g. Codelist management and SDMX (With 2 FAO depts. eStat, BoI), Linked Open Data (with the LOD2 project), and to improve geospatial data management in FAO-FI.

None to report.

The First iMarine Board meeting was succesfully concluded in Rome.

The Advisory Council was convened in Rome, and succesfully provided high-level input to the first iMarine Board meeting

ERCIM Activities

No feedback received

CNR Activities

CNR collaborated with with FAO in the preparation of the iMarine Board and iMarine Advisory Council. CNR members also gave a number of presentations during these meeting on different project activities.

No major deviation to report.

  • Successful iMarine Board and iMarine Advisory Council meetings.

Terradue Activities

Presented progress and planns at the TCom, iMarine Advisory Council and iMarine Board.

A range of presentations is made availbale on-line.

FIN Activities

No Feedback received.

UNESCO Activities

report pending.

IRD Activities

IRD contributed significantly to all WP3 meetings of the reporting period.

IRD propose an activity with FORTH on top level ontologies in the Ecology domain.

The beneficiary should report here major issues faced in the reporting period and the identified corrective actions, if any.

All presentations have been made available through BSCW.

T3.2 Governance Mechanisms, Policies and Guidelines Development

FAO Activities

The iMarine Advisory council was consulted on their experience with Governance and Policy development issues. They provided valuable input to the discussions at the First iMarine Board meeting. (see the reports of the Advisory Council and iMarine Board Meeting)

FAO-FI prepared a first draft to a background document on which to base the Data Access and Sharing Policies. This document describes how to guarantee proper attributions and promote adherence to data licensing schemas. Even if iMarine promotes Open Data, it will have to safeguard parts of the data contained in the infrastructure for incorrect use, and ensure that data are cited properly.

No deveiations to report.

During the reporting period, a first draft of the Data Access and Sharing policy was circulated and discussed at the first iMarine Board Meeting.

T3.3 Harmonisation of Metadata, Semantics and Technologies

FAO Activities

This task was very active, both in the preparatory phase before the TCom and the iMarine Board meeting, but especially during th imarine Board considerable time was allocated in the cluster discussion (Semantics, Geospatial, Biological, and Statistical) to discuss how a large infrastructure such as D4Science can offer it's benefits to CoP's.

For each cluster, the progress is now better documented and discussed, although there are some deviations to report:

  • The semantics cluster proposed to investigate into the development of top-level ontologies to support the analysis of marine food-webs. This requires an feasibility analysis to assess the value of the proposed implementation.
  • The statistical cluster proposed to invest heavily in the deevlopmnet of a code-list manager, with intensive consulations of potential real-life collaborative parties. This will start outside the immediate technology scope of the d4S infrastructure, and care has to be tkaen to ensure re-usabiity in the e-Infrastructure.
  • The biological cluster has validated the approach implemented by CNR for the access to species occurence data, yet identified together with the developers shortcomings in the data-flows (starting from the external data-providers). This will require that representatives of the project contact several large data-providers for additional detail.
  • the geospatial cluster reported interesting opportunitites using WPS and hadoop facilities that were not foreseen in the DoW. The interoperability features offerd by D4Science however, permit to define and develop interesting features exploiting the 'best of both worlds', and the approach was vindicated at the TCom.

CNR Activities

CNR harmonized the metadata provided by OBIS and GBIF with the aim to provide a common way to discover and access the data provided by those sources.

None

The result of the harmonization performed in this task has been used in the Species service, i.e., the prototypical service implementing the needs of the Biodiversity cluster.

FORTH Activities

We have started the discussions with FAO and IRD regarding the use cases for the semantic cluster. We have proposed an action plan for the next 1.5 month. This includes actions about the emergence of a common ontology. For coordinating this activity a new document ( or wiki page) will be created (for the entire semantic cluster).
Furthermore the related milestones for M6 should be taken into account.
