This WP6 Activity Report described the activities performed in January 2012 by Beneficiary and Task. It is part of January 2012 Activity Report.

During this reporting period CNR activity focuses on the maintenance of the VREs previously deployed. Moreover, the Wiki page documenting the plan, i.e. Virtual Research Environments Deployment and Operation: Plan has been produced.

CNR Activities

CNR activity regarded:

  • the analysis of the requirements and modalities for the integration of the GBIF datasource;
  • the continuation of the activity on the OBIS database integration.

The work involved the connection to the GBIF web service and the implementation of a parser for the DGir-Tapir protocol. As for the Obis database, an investigation of the contents has been performed in order to extract information suited to client applications which implement a general approach for taxonomies investigation as well as occurrence point extraction from data sources. This work follows the trend of the definition of a common set of semantic knowledge which is the minimal form of information that has to be extracted from a data source of species. The aim is to build up an exploration interface which offers to final users a complete view of the information, stored in the d4science infrastructure about a certain species or family.

A prototype interface has been built on top of Obis and GBIF connectors in order to test the integration performances. Occurrence points and datasets are extracted and reported from GBIF. A family of queries to retrieve compact and complete information about occurrence points and ranks for species or families from OBIS has been identified.

  • Implementation of a testing interface for the connector.

T6.3 Virtual Research Environments Common Interfaces and Tools

CNR Activities

CNR activity focused on the deployment of the iMarine development portal by relying on the new gCube Portal Bundle 2.0. (The iMarine development portal will serve as a development environment for next releases, starting with gCube 2.8.0)

Besides:

  • A Wiki page containing instructions for the gCube Portal Installation has been created and made available on the Administrator's Guide.
  • CNR gCube Portlets have been upgraded to use the latest version of GWT 2.4. This upgrade required to test each portlet for any malfunction.
  • A generic Quick tour guide widget has been implemented to help new users understand how to use gCube Apps.
  • A WIKI page containing instructions on how to instantiate the Quick tour described above has been created and made available on the Developer's Guide.

NKUA Activities

NKUA activities performed in this period include:

  • Portlets are upgraded to use the latest version of GWT 2.4. This upgrade required to test each portlet for any malfunction.
  • Some portlets needed an update due to changes of the GWT's standard CSS
  • Most of the portlets are deployed on a development iMarine portal using Liferay 6 and minor problems were identified and fixed.

  • NKUA supported FORTH institute with the installation of a development portal and the exploitation of the ASL HTTP component.
